Homelessness support in winter
Due to low temperatures this week, NFDC has activated the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP).
SWEP is activated when the temperature is forecast to fall to 0°C or below.
It may also be triggered by other severe weather conditions that could pose significant health risks, such as wind, rain, heat, or snow, and provides emergency accommodation to anyone sleeping rough.
NFDC proactively contact those known to sleep rough, however NFDC can also be notified about those sleeping rough in the district, through Streetlink, a reporting tool at https://newforest.gov.uk/article/1121/Homeless-or-rough-sleeping-referrals
Additionally, NFDC offers a Housing Assistance Referral Portal on its website, where people can refer themselves or others for help.
This portal allows the council to assess eligibility and provide tailored support, including temporary accommodation and assistance with securing long-term housing.
Cllr Steve Davies, deputy leader of the council and portfolio holder for housing and homelessness, said: “Our support to those sleeping rough extends all year round, ensuring continuous care for our vulnerable residents.
We are dedicated to ensuring that no one in our community has to face the winter months without shelter and support and can provide immediate assistance this winter and work towards long-term solutions.”
